Description

The "castle" of Pioppi

The origins of Palazzo Vinciprova are intertwined with the saga of the Ripolo, Catalan merchants who settled in Pollica during the Aragonese rule of the Kingdom of Naples. In 1888 the building belonged to the mayor Giuseppe Sodano and later passed to the Vinciprova family of Omignano. In Pioppi it is known to everyone simply as "the castle".

The structure is made up of two side towers, with terraces featuring arabesque crenellations, and a central body that joins them. The seaward facade has a wide portico topped by an elegant terrace overlooking the water. The architecture blends Baroque lines and Moorish-style decorative elements, with an evocative castle-like effect.

Important scientific meetings were held here: the 2nd International Congress of Cardiology (1970) led by Prof. Ancel Keys, the 1st International Symposium of Vitaminology (1971) and the 1st Italian Seminar of Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention (1987). Tradition also recalls the arrival by sea of the small galleon "Emma", commanded by Alexandre Dumas senior, who during the Risorgimento supplied weapons to Garibaldi's troops. Today the palace belongs to the Municipality of Pollica and houses the Living Sea Museum and the Ancel Keys Mediterranean Diet Ecomuseum.
